Organic Certification – Facts You Should Know

The many health advantages that organic foods offer are the first thing that spring to mind when we talk about them. The methods used to manufacture organic foods set them apart from regular foods. The techniques of organic farming, which include measures like fostering ecological balance, maintaining biodiversity, and restricting the use of artificial food additives, must be followed in order for foods to be considered organic. There are organizations devoted to ensuring the upkeep of these standards.

In essence, organic food producers and enterprises are required to secure an Organic Certification for each product they create. There are conditions that must be met to receive that certification. When a farm or manufacturing company receives organic certification, they can market, food labels and advertise their products as organic. More options in the market are offered to customers by the organic brand. By safeguarding the organic seal, the governing authority preserves customer choices.

Any organic operation that disobeys the APEDA rules will face enforcement proceedings, which may include monetary fines or the suspension or revocation of their organic certificate.

Organic Certification in India

The organic farming system is an established technique for farming that focuses on raising crops in a way that makes the soil alive and ensures that the food we eat is nutritious. Using natural fertilizers and farming techniques, organic farming produces crops sustainably without sacrificing crop quality. The idea of and demand for organic agricultural products are expanding quickly as customers start to pay more attention to the quality of the food they eat and become more aware of it.

The National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), an arm of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, oversees organic farming certification in India. The National Organic Program for Agriculture establishes standards for organic production, as well as procedures, criteria, and a process for accrediting certification bodies. It also establishes rules for the usage of the National (India Organic) Logo.

The procedures and criteria were developed per other international regulations governing the import and export of organic products. The following India Organic emblem may be used on produce by farms that have acquired Organic Farming Certification and comply with the standards set out by the National Programme for Organic Production.

How does organic certification work?

In order to protect soil and water quality, promote sustainability, and advance animal welfare, farm owners and food manufacturers are encouraged to follow the APEDA's organic standards and regulations, which forbid the use of synthetic pesticides, GMOs, antibiotics, and other prohibited substances.

The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority’s organic rules are complied with when a farm or handling facility receives organic certification. You can use the APEDA organic logo and food labels and sell and advertise your product as "certified organic" after it has been certified.

Who and what should have organic certification?

Crops, farm animals, processed products, and exotic crops are the four product categories that can be certified by the APEDA. It must be certified if a farm or business sells any of these goods for more than 5 Lakhs INR in gross yearly organic sales.

Even without APEDA organic certification, a business may legally label and sell items as organic if it gets less than 5 Lakhs. However, if these businesses want to use the APEDA organic seal or call their goods "certified organic," they must apply for voluntary certification.

How to get the organic farming certificate?

Anyone seeking to certify their agricultural farm as organic must submit an application in the required format, together with the required fee, and complete field verification. In addition, the applicant or farmer must confirm that their farm complies with the requirements set forth by the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) for the growth of organic crops before submitting an application.
